How Do You Tell If You’re Using A Quality Essential Oil…Or Not
I’ve been asked this questions more times than any other question. “How do you tell the high quality essential oils from the not-so -quality ones?”
This is a very good question. And knowing that every essential oil company out there “claims” to be the highest quality company and they trash all the other companies…it is hard to know what is truth and what is the fluff.
Being a medial aromatherapist, and having had the experience of testing most essential oils out there, I do believe there is a superior quality of essential oils. If you’re interested in what I use, check it out here.
If you want to compare the essential oils you are using to see if they are truly quality, I have put together a little list. If you will STRICTLY use only oils that have the following things, then you will have better quality oils than most.
1. Be SURE you are only using organic or wild crafted essential oils. These are purer and more medicinal than non-organic oils. It MUST HAVE Organic or Wild-Crafted on the label, or it’s not either. I don’t care what the company will tell you on the phone or in a meeting…if it’s not on the label then it’s NOT organic or wild-crafted. Organic and wild-crafted oils cost more and are harder to obtain. If your company is going to the expense and effort to obtain organic or wild-crafted essential oils they are not going to forget to put it on the label.
But if you a dealing with a company that is claiming to have organic or wild-crafted oils but it is not on the label — now you know — You’re dealing with one of “those” companies.
2. 100% pure essential oil on the label literally means NOTHING. Companies can dilute and enhance essential oils over 50% and STILL call them 100% pure in this country. So 100% pure on the label means NOTHING.
3. Every single batch of every single essential oil the company has must be tested by a gas chromatograph and a mass spectrometer. If they’re not testing the oils this way — walk away. There is no way to tell what they are selling!
4. So now if your company is claiming to be testing using a gas chromatograph and a mass spectrometer (which, unfortunately, many companies claim and few actually do) then they will put a batch and a lot # sticker on every single bottle of oil. If your bottles don’t have a batch and lot # sticker — not a good sign.
5. And if your company really is testing the oils and putting batch and lot # stickers on every bottle then they would love to prove to you that they are actually doing this testing. I challenge you to take one of your bottles specifically into your company and ask to see the gas chromatograph tests for that specific batch and lot #. ANY company that is ACTUALLY doing the testing would be happy to show these to you. They should take you to a large filing cabinet, look through the files and find the exact batch and lot # that matches your bottle. I’ve done it several times with the company where I but my oils, and I love going in and seeing the gas chromatograph tests for myself. If they tell you they cannot show them to you — for any weak reason they may give you — let a big red flag go up in your mind. There is no reason why they wouldn’t want to show these to you. It probably means they don’t have them to show you.
Unfortunately, there are companies out there who are telling their people they are doing all this testing and going to all this extremity to get the best oils, and they are not. So to really be able to tell, I suggest you follow these steps. The one thing I hate more than any other in this business is there are companies out there who are intentionally deceiving their people. These steps will help you steer clear of most of the dishonest ones.
6. The very last thing I recommend is that you buy essential oils from an International Medical Aromatheripist. I have found that most companies in the USA all get their sources from the same mediocre grade sources. You want to get oils that are sourced from the very best sources from all over the world.
Do you want to know which Essential Oil company passes all these steps with flying colors, that I have personally checked out? It’s where I buy my oils. Check them out here.
